Thai people from three northeastern provinces have decided to return their Thai IDs and citizenship documents to the authority in protest against discrimination and unequal treatment from the central government in Bangkok, reports everyday.com.

Everyday.com quoted an unnamed Thai newspaper as saying that the majority of Thai people living in the northeastern province of Mukdahan have decided to return all their ID papers and citizenship documents to the Thai authority and told them that they just want to give up their Thai citizenship. They did not say what country they want to become a citizen of, but just said that they want to give up Thai citizenship because they said the present Thai government is racist and is killing its own people over recent bloody crackdown on the red protesters in Bangkok.

Mukdahan province borders with Laos and is populated mainly by ethnic Laotian people.

At the same time, the majority of Thais from Ubon and Sisaket provinces have also decided to return their ID papers and citizenship documents to the Thai authority in protest of discrimination and unequal treatment from the present Thai government. They said they hate the present Thai government that maltreated the poor people who are Thai citizens like them. They said the present Thai government is treating Thai people differently based on a caste system.

Ubon province borders with Cambodia’s Preah Vihear province, while Sisaket, known in Khmer as Kauk Khan, borders with Cambodia’s Oddar Meanchey and Preah Vihear provinces. These two provinces are mainly populated by ethnic Khmers.

People from these provinces are mostly ethnic Laotians and Khmers, known as the Thai Issan or northeast Thais, who are poor and have been looked down by the ethnic Thais and neglected by the Thai central governments, mostly led by the elite ethnic Thais in Bangkok, for centuries. They made up the core supporters of the red shirt movement that have been brutally cracked down in Bangkok a few days ago.
